Stuart Dunbar - Automata maker, Mechanical Engineer, Special Effects Artist, Technical Artist
I came to Wimbledon looking for a course that would help build upon my existing knowledge of automata with the introduction of a broad range of creative skills and materials, but I feel I have came away with a lot more then just technical skills. I was encouraged to try a broad spectrum of mediums and processes and have found that my passion for designing and making translates through into whatever medium I choose to exploit. Through the development of my work and especially with automata it has helped me to become well adapted to regular problem solving and on the spot improvising; these skills have been essentially demonstrated whilst working on various music videos.
My final year piece stems from an outside interest in one of philosophies most contested problems, Free Will. My tunnel opens up this problem for the viewer to witness through my explorations on the subject. The piece incorporates sensor activated automata scenes that show some of mankind’s fundamental and intuitive traits of life that I am uncertain we have any choice over.
