Harry Riley - Set Designer
I used a theme of Liverpool for my final major project of the course, and I have chosen to design for Melanie C as a solo artist, because she grew up in Liverpool. My Idea was to create a set for Mel to use in a TV concert, and the location I decided on is a large television studio at London Studios. My research was mainly focusing on Mel, her life, work, personality. I generated ideas to try and create a set that was instantly recognisable as a Melanie C set. The most interesting visuals I drew out of my research on her were her ten different tattoos. I decided to develop the tattoos in to different elements of a set and connect them all together to resemble something like an adventure playground, which linked in her sporty persona that she had with the Spice Girls. When adding lights to the set, it gave me an idea of developing the set to resemble a pinball machine, so that Mel could act as the ball running from stage to stage. The setting I have created as a backdrop for the tattoos is an old dock in Liverpool. Mel had an apartment in a developed part of the docks when she was with the Spice Girls. I stylised the dock to become a backdrop for the tattoo stages. The idea behind this was to show a place she came from, and what her world has transformed in to now. The final set is made up of her ten tattoos which are all functional pieces in the design and all linked together by a stylised version of her dragon tattoo, which works as a tunnel for her to run through the entire set from stage to stage. The overall look of the set is dark, with the ten tattoos illuminating the space.
