The students and staff of the BA(Hons) Set Design for Stage & Screen course welcome visitors to the 2008 degree show.  The course offers a programme focusing on the professional practices of set design for film and television based on an understanding of theatre’s contribution to text interpretation and performance design. Through collaborative and individual work, which includes a careful balance of realised and speculative projects, students develop their preferences for future professional specialisation as well as experience and appreciation of the particularities of each discipline’s professional practices

Every class has its own distinctive character, a hint of pot-noodle, a bouquet of super-glue with an after-taste of warm trainers, the class of 2008 have been something very special. They never let us off the hook, demanding, frustrating, infuriating, but also, quite quite wonderful.  We can only look on amazed and in awe of such huge raw talent.  Cliché it may be but it has been a real privilege to guide this cohort through the last three years.

Strong, individual and distinctive the show is a reflection of both the students talent but also the diverse pathways that they have chosen to follow within the umbrella of Set Design for Stage and Screen. The means by which design ideas are explored and communicated is under constant review. Fundamental skills of observational and conceptual drawing, technical drawing and scale model making are encouraged but, at the same time, there is active exploration in the use of information technology - computer animation, video capture and editing, CAD and the use of the Internet.

They have been able to draw on a strong relationship with a wide range of distinguished professional practitioners in theatre, film and television some of whom teach on the course.  The students we know will join us in thanking the terrific contribution made by our staff of very talented and knowledgeable associate lecturers, Marie Blunck, Kerry Bradley, David Neat and Grant Hicks. The students also enjoy close links with students from specialist institutions of film such as The National Film and Television School, the London Film Academy, the London College of Communication and Goldsmiths College where they collaborate on film production.
