The School of Theatre
The School of Theatre, now part of the wider community of performance related provision in the University of the Arts, London, has a long-standing international reputation for the quality of its courses in theatre design and related disciplines. The School continues to develop and expand and in September earlier this year the first students on our new Foundation degree in Multicultural Theatre Practice joined us, adding an exciting and pioneering ingredient to our portfolio. In January 2008 students also enrolled on another new Foundation degree course Production for Live Events and Television, developed in collaboration with London College of Communication (LCC), which has completed the undergraduate portfolio of courses for the foreseeable future. Future plans for academic development will focus on postgraduate provision and the enrichment of our increasingly popular and successful MA course The Visual Language of Performance.
The second phase of the building programme for the Theatre School that has been proceeding throughout this year will begin in earnest following the close of this year’s exhibition and will complete the auditiorium with the installation of a gallery around all four sides of the space and the provision of a flexible seating system. We now have:
- A new purpose-built, soundproof film studio (using part of the original theatre’s footprint) to facilitate the increase in work for the screen on many of our courses and, in particular, to provide fit for purpose facilities for the new Production for Live Events and Television course.
- Disabled lift access to the auditorium’s mezzanine, lighting control gallery and first floor undergraduate studios.
- A purpose built archive centre to house the growing collection of internationally significant designs and ephemera of renowned and influential theatre designers.
- New lighting access gantries to comply with current Health and Safety legislation.
and by the beginning of the autumn term later this year:
- A flexible and comfortable theatre auditorium complete with a new mezzanine seating area.
This huge improvement to the Theatre School’s infrastructure has been made possible by the generous support of the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation and further sponsorship is being actively sought to secure the funding necessary to complete the second stage of the project, which will provide much needed dressing rooms/seminar rooms, sound design facilities and, importantly, storage for theatre equipment.
I must extend my appreciation to all our students and staff who have put up with the inevitable disruption and inconveniences during this major building programme throughout much of the academic year and hope we can now all reap the rewards of our patience!
This latest cohort of final year students from six undergraduate pathways, exhibiting a selection of the culminating body of work after their three years with us, ably continues the tradition of high quality achievement established by many illustrious predecessors.

I hope that visitors enjoy the great range and quality of work on display and will join with me in wishing our newest graduating students every success in their future careers.
